Policies & terms

Excerpt policy

Rules for quoting published CANREADS reviews.

Last updated

1. Using excerpts

Authors, publishers, publicists and booksellers may quote excerpts from published CANREADS reviews to promote their books. Permitted uses include book covers, dust jackets, interior pages, retailer listings, author and publisher websites, social media, newsletters, press releases, advertisements, sell sheets, catalogues and other marketing materials. All excerpts must follow this policy.

2. Attribution

Every excerpt must clearly credit CANREADS or CANREADS Book Review. We encourage linking directly to the published review on the CANREADS website whenever possible.

3. Accuracy

You may quote complete sentences or short passages, and omit words or sentences using ellipses where appropriate, provided the reviewer’s intended meaning is preserved. Do not alter quotation wording, remove context in a way that changes its meaning, attribute opinions absent from the published review to CANREADS or imply an endorsement beyond what the review states.

4. Pull quotes

Bold pull quotes selected by the CANREADS editorial team are intended for promotional use and may be reproduced under this policy. You may also quote other passages when they accurately reflect the published text.

5. Full reviews

Reviews remain CANREADS’ intellectual property. You may link directly to a published review or quote portions under this policy. Reproducing a full review on another website or platform requires CANREADS’ prior written permission. Do not present a full review in a way that implies it originated elsewhere.

6. Updates

Future excerpts should use the latest corrected or revised review.

7. Awards

Positive quotations do not establish awards, shortlist places or further endorsements. Advertise only official CANREADS recognition.
